Caspar Trying to Hold Its Water |
Caspar News and Press ReleasesCaspar Trying to Hold Its WaterWater, water everywhere, but who will own it and affect its use. This is the question for Caspar's Community Meeting on Sunday, November 17, at 3 pm at the Caspar Community Center. The meeting will be followed by a potluck feast. Caspar Cattle Company is selling the property east of Highway One which is the location of water wells. Escrow is scheduled to close in December, and Casparados have an opportunity to affect the ownership and use of this water resource. Presenters at Sunday's meeting on Caspar Water will describe the Caspar water system, the capacity of the existing wells and an estimate of current usage. They will discuss possible sources of funding to purchase and upgrade the system, and possible ownership configurations of the water resource. Water operators and owners of water systems from Elk, Albion, Caspar South and Westport will describe the plusses and minuses of their town's particular water systems (they are all different!), including costs, sources of funding, and the particulars of meeting state water quality mandates. There will be ample time for questions and concerns to be expressed and a bank of knowledgeable people to work on answers. "Water is one of Caspar's treasured resources," says Caspar Community President Mike Dell'Ara. Then he added, "Another treasured resource is the community's engagement is dealing with the challenges the community faces. I hope everyone who can possibly make it comes to this important meeting." written by Judy Tarbell for the Mendocino Beacon, 14 November 2002
