¡Mambo This!
¡Mambo This! is an eight piece salsa band based on the Mendocino Coast. We have gathered from a variety of musical backgrounds to share our love of Afro-Cuban music. Most of us have been playing professionally for 25+ years, drawing from a wealth of knowledge and experience in jazz, classical, salsa, funk, West African, Calypso, R&B, klezmer and more.
¡Mambo This! has been performing at dances, weddings, wineries, outdoor concerts, clubs, parties and benefits here on the Northcoast since 2000. Our personnel includes Dan Albrecht on keyboard, bongos, lead vocals and coro, Jim Dooley on trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone and coro, Michael Hubbert on cuatro (a small Puerto Rican guitar), tenor and alto sax, clarinet, lead vocals and coro, Ted Kidwell on trombone and coro, David Lipkind on bass, Richie Rosenbaum on drum set and percussion, Karl Schoen on tenor and baritone sax, flute, percussion and coro, and Paul Schulman on congas and coro. With so many possibilities of instrumentation, the sound of ¡Mambo This! can vary from small son-conjunto to a full-on salsa band.
Much of our material is drawn from the deep well of traditional Cuban music. Classic son-montunos such as El Reloj de Pastora by Arsenio Rodriguez, Que Viva Chango by Celina Gonzalez and Capullito de Alheli by Raphael Hernandez join ballads like Beny More's Como Fue and the durable Besame Mucho. Latin-jazz tunes such as Afro Blue by Mongo Santamaria and Charlie Parker's Little Suede Shoes mix it up with the classic Calypso number Shake Sonora, an original Cumbia, some funky Boogaloo and Ozomatli's Como Vez to create an eclectic repetoire of Latin dance music.
For more information or bookings, visit the ¡Mambo This! website, or call Paul Schulman at 962-0164 (home) or 937-1822 (work).
Other sound samples available at this site include Mi Querer and Mueve la Cintura Mulata, and all require a Real Audio player.
