Kevin and the Coconuts
Steelband
Kevin and the Coconuts, a steelband based in Mendocino, California, plays a lively mix of calypso, soca, latin and original tunes with the greatest musical inspiration coming from the islands of Trinidad and Cuba.
The band is comprised of Kevin Grant, pan-builder, tuner and arranger on lead pan and double seconds; Annie Lee on the three cello pans; Dalen Anderson on the four bass pans; Chad Swimmer on drumset and percussion; and Paul Schulman on congas. This core group of five can be expanded with the addition of a three piece horn section and special guests.
The following is a partial list of the events and venues where Kevin and the Coconuts have performed:
Wild Iris Folk Festival
Carnaval de Mendocino
Winesong!
The Rhododendron Ball
The Mendocino County Wine Growers Annual Dinner
A Great Day in Elk
The Caspar Inn
The Little River Inn
Winter in the Redwoods, College of the Redwoods

Kevin Grant, "head coconut," not only arranges the music and plays lead and doubles, but also makes the pans, starting with 55 gallon drums. Kevin has such a good ear and knack for tuning these tricky instruments that he is regularly flown back east to tune the pans of professionals.
